Where it covers
- England
- Wales
- Scotland(not covered)
- Northern Ireland(not covered)
Scotland's homes are banded by its own assessors, not the Valuation Office Agency, so this count covers England and Wales only.
Northern Ireland has domestic rates, not council tax bands.
- England25,047 of 33,755 neighbourhoods have a figure
- Wales1,393 of 1,917 neighbourhoods have a figure
- Scotland0 of 7,392 neighbourhoods have a figure
- Northern Ireland0 of 3,780 neighbourhoods have a figure
1,000 neighbourhoods have no figure for 2026. The map hatches each one and gives the reason.
- Fewer than 5 homes here are in this band. The Valuation Office Agency does not publish counts that small, so there is no share. City of London 001C, Barking and Dagenham 016B, Barking and Dagenham 023B, Barking and Dagenham 001A, Barking and Dagenham 001B, Barking and Dagenham 001C and 994 more
How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Valuation Office Agency publishes them, for the areas they were published for: nations, regions, councils, middle areas and neighbourhoods.
Rates for larger areas are worked out again from their own counts and populations, never averaged from neighbourhoods.
Zoom in past neighbourhood level and the map keeps the neighbourhood shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it
- Band H is for homes worth over £320,000 at 1 April 1991 in England, and £324,001 to £424,000 at 1 April 2003 in Wales.
- Shares are worked out from the Valuation Office Agency's counts, which are rounded to the nearest 10 homes, so small areas can be a point or two out. Counts under 5 are not published, so the share is left blank.
- Bands are not comparable between England and Wales: they use different valuation dates and value ranges. Open Index compares and ranks them within each nation only.
- The count is every home on the council tax list at 31 March, including empty homes and homes that are exempt.
Colours on the map
Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
How Open Index describes it
Page text on Open Index comes from this layer’s sentence rules, filled in with published figures. For Hackney:
0.0% of homes in Hackney were in council tax Band H at the end of March 2026.
That compares with 1.8% across London.
